The Czech Republic, a cultural treasure in the heart of Europe: a unique concentration of UNESCO sites

La Tchéquie, trésor culturel au cœur de l’Europe : une concentration unique de sites UNESCO

A land steeped in history with an exceptionally rich heritage, the Czech Republic is one of the world’s most remarkable cultural destinations. With 17 UNESCO World Heritage Sites covering just 78,866 km², it ranks among the countries with the highest density of cultural treasures per square kilometre. From intact medieval towns to masterpieces of modern architecture, through cultural landscapes shaped by centuries of European history, the Czech Republic offers a spectacular journey through time, where every discovery becomes a sensory and emotional experience.

The uniqueness of the Czech Republic lies not only in the beauty of its monuments, but also in the human commitment that animates them. Behind many historic sites are passionate owners, often private individuals, who invest their energy, resources and creativity to preserve these treasures, reinvent them and make them accessible to the public.

‘The Czech Republic is a true cultural powerhouse. We have an exceptionally rich heritage, and much of its appeal today stems from the commitment of passionate owners. Their vision, boldness and creativity bring these places to life and make them accessible to contemporary visitors. For international tourism, this is invaluable,’ emphasises František Reismüller, director of CzechTourism.

He adds: ‘Our analyses confirm that heritage is the main motivation for visitors from afar. Last year, 92% of Japanese tourists, 83% of Chinese visitors, 87% of South Koreans and 82% of Americans visited castles, museums or historical monuments during their stay. Czech cultural wealth is a globally sought-after experience.’

A mosaic of UNESCO treasures within easy reach

Located in the heart of Europe, the Czech Republic offers exceptional accessibility to its major sites. From Prague, several World Heritage gems can be explored in just a few hours, allowing visitors to travel through a thousand years of history in a single trip.

The historic centre of Prague, listed in 1992, is one of the most spectacular urban complexes in Europe, where Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture coexist in a setting dominated by Prague Castle and Charles Bridge.

About 170 kilometres from the capital, the historic centre of Český Krumlov in South Bohemia immerses visitors in a perfectly preserved medieval town, dominated by a monumental castle and surrounded by the meandering Vltava River.

The historic centre of Telč, a masterpiece of Renaissance urban planning located an hour and a half from Prague, captivates visitors with its harmonious square lined with colourful houses featuring elegant façades.

Eighty kilometres from the capital, Kutná Hora, a former silver mining town, bears witness to medieval economic power with its remarkable Gothic architecture, notably St. Barbara’s Cathedral.

Religious architecture reaches a unique dimension with the Pilgrimage Church of St. John of Nepomuk on Green Hill, located two hours from Prague, a visionary Baroque masterpiece combining spiritual symbolism and architectural innovation.

Further south, the cultural landscape of Lednice-Valtice, one of the largest landscaped areas in Europe, features romantic chateaux, monumental gardens and ponds in a setting shaped by the Liechtenstein family.

Finally, modernity finds its expression in the Villa Tugendhat in Brno, an architectural manifesto of the 20th century by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, which has had a profound impact on the history of contemporary architecture.

A living heritage and an immersive cultural experience

What sets the Czech Republic apart on the international stage is its ability to bring history and modernity into dialogue. Inhabited castles, passionately restored monuments, innovative cultural experiences and contemporary artistic programming transform heritage discovery into an immersive experience.

This dynamic approach attracts a new generation of travellers seeking authenticity, emotion and meaning, positioning the destination among the major cultural references in Europe.

Just a two-hour flight from Paris, the Czech Republic offers an exceptional concentration of historical treasures, remarkable accessibility and rare cultural diversity. With its world heritage sites, exceptional architecture and living traditions, it offers an intense cultural experience where every place tells a story and every visit becomes a discovery.

More than just a trip, the Czech Republic offers an encounter with European history at its most vibrant, inspiring and authentic.

“We are delighted that the highly successful exhibition of large-format photographs depicting Czech cities listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites is continuing this year. After being shown in central Paris and the Centre-Val de Loire region, it will travel to other regions of France. We would be delighted to inspire you on your journey to discover UNESCO treasures. Whether it’s the treasures you’ll find in the photographs in the exhibition, or other sites on the map of this country located in the heart of Europe, just waiting to be discovered,” adds Markéta Dianová, Director of the Czech National Tourist Board-CzechTourism in Paris.
