Cements Dubai’s position as a fashion powerhouse, By Angelina Kali

Dubai has firmly established itself as one of the most important international business centres. When Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Ruler of Dubai unveiled his future vision for Dubai some decades ago, few could have foreseen its meteoric rise from a local trading port to it becoming a global financial centre, major airline hub and cultural melting pot.

Millions of people from all over the world have been attracted to endless possibilities and near constant sunshine. They bring with them their local styles which makes it the global melting pot where eastern and western fashion merge. Thus, it is only a natural progression for Dubai to become a fashion powerhouse. This can be evidenced by the resounding success of the inaugural event of the Middle East Fashion Week (MEFW) last March, which was founded by Antonio Rubel Lo Gatto, the Chairman of Arab Fashion Week and his son Simon Rubel Lo Gatto. This has attracted some of the very best designers to its highly anticipated second edition in October 2022 with the lead sponsors being the reputable IFZA and Deloitte. Its popularity can be attributed to not only attracting the best established and emerging international and regional designers but also due to the event being held at the same location for its entire duration. Since there was no need to rush around the city to another location for the next show, the attendees could enjoy the professional entertainment in between the shows or mingle with the designers, buyers, press and fashionistas in the comfortable lounge areas.

In an interview on Fashion TV, the world renowned celebrity designer Michael Cinco stated that the MEFW is not only the leading fashion platform in Dubai but is also quickly establishing itself as one of the most important international fashion weeks. This is some high praise indeed from someone whose clients include Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Aishwarya Rai and many more. Famed for his beautiful evening gowns, Cinco vowed the crowd at the MEFW with his almost futuristic all black mono-coloured creations for both men and women where the design, texture and styling overshadowed the need for a supplementary colour. His Monet-inspired collection represents refined modernity at its very best.

Garimon Roferos Couture and Ezra Couture were another two notable fashion houses to present their latest collections at MEFW. Garimon Roferos showcased a daring modern collection together with his signature couture evening gowns. The standout creation was his stunning white bridal gown with a white winged head-dress. The high regard that the MEFW is held even convinced Ezra Santos to emerge from his fashion show sabbatical to present his new collection ‘A New Beginning’ representing hope in a time of calamity and turbulence in the world. His collection combined with his message that ‘Love Conquers All’ was so greatly appreciated that he was given a standing ovation by the enthralled audience. The very popular designer Irena Soprano with over 1.4 million followers on Instagram presented her latest ready-to-wear collection for the fashion label Sol. She embodied the cultural melting pot that is Dubai with an Arab inspired collection of evening dresses, perfectly fusing western and eastern fashion whilst mixing traditional styling with modern fabrics.

With most of the who’s who in Dubai’s fashion community in attendance, the MEFW has firmly established itself as a must-attend fashion event in the fashion calendar with Fashion TV providing extensive coverage. If you don’t want to miss out on the highly anticipated MEFW’s next edition in March 2023, it is highly recommended to book your tickets early as there were no empty seats.
